So is zip and tar.gz  :-)

What 7z has going for it is a nice compression ratio. Historically this 
has been hampered by being bound to Windows, but it seems that might 
have changed recently.

All the other formats we use are just as open. And in a way, they're 
more open because they are also standard. As much as I love the cool 
LZMA algorithm, open-ness is not a reason to use it.
