I don't remember, have you  tried to save as Plain SVG? that did the 
trick for me with some complex images. Maybe a simplification after 
vectorization?

I think you can use some input from Jonny Automatic, who is doing *lots* 
of stuff like this and should know the tricks.

I think is a good thing to remove those JPEGs and replace them with PNGs.
