This is no memory limitation, just an inability to handle more than 11
bits of coordinate resolution somewhere in the 3d engine iirc. A
possible solution would be to use 2 independent framebuffers, and i'm
quite sure it's on someone's todo list to allow this. But today you'll
have to live with this limitation as far as i know.
