The X server and libraries have not been built for years without these 
extensions, and they are effectively a standard part of the system now.
I would suggest that the likelyhood of the unused code still working 
correctly is rather small, and that subtle bugs are probably present.  

Instead of inviting disaster by suggesting people attempt to build a 
system without these extensions, it seems more prudent to stop the 
pretense and make them part of the core system (in a software sense, not a 
standards sense).

Untested code is broken code.
