I have had a read through the document you posted to the list. I like 
the idea of using SSML in a common interface. You mention wrappers for 
systems such as gnome-speech or speech-dispatcher. Has it occurred to 
you that it also might be better to discuss having only one back-end 
that would handle all synthesizer drivers? Then one would only need 
passthrough drivers from other systems. So for example, gnome-speech is 
the current GNOME backend for synthesized speech. It becomes a client of 
the common back-end as it were.

Do I make sense?
