I'd think you'd want to match the HTML defaults which is <em> = italic and
<strong> = bold. Though I'd only treat these tags as hints - it should also
be acceptable to do both as bold (e.g. on a command line) or do no
formatting if not appropriate in a particular client.

Since it's used in a description I don't see how this helps it stand out.
If markup was supported in titles or summaries then yes, this could be a
problem in search results. If there are any terrible metadata writers out
there some examples in the spec of good usage may help :)
