I am using a self compiled 0.35.2 as distributed from
freedesktop.org, installed into its own temporary directory, so that
it doesn't conflict with HAL. (i.e. I can run two system daemons at
the same time, once 0.35 and once 0.28)

As discussed on IRC: this looks like a 0.34/0.35 incompatibility.
