There are IETF standards around character sets used in host names (I
believe you should be able to find them in the DNS and/or mail
standards).
The Internet Koan is "Be liberal in what you accept and strict with what
you produce". (e.g. accept anything that is anything remotely
understandable, but ensure your implementation only transmits the
standards.
So you should never die, do the best you can with garbage, and ensure
you never transmit trash.
I'm not convinced the current standards even allow UTF-8 in host names;
but then again, it's been a while since I was steeped in this stuf.
