[avahi] using Avahi in unaware applications

Perfect!  I installed 0.8, and it fixes the performance problem and
also the problem with whois.

Other users of Debian testing/unstable who wish to have 0.8 may find
it by adding

  deb     http://www.eecs.harvard.edu/~nr/debian ./

to /etc/apt/sources.list.  (Be warned: I should have given it an NMU
version number, but I didn't.)
