I don't think Avahi makes such a good unicast DNS client. In fact it
is a very limited implementation of a DNS client. Just good enough for
the few things required to make DNS-SD over unicast DNS possible. Some
things you might find in a proper DNS client lib are not supported by
Avahi. Most notably non-recursive lookups come to my mind here.

If you need just unicast DNS, have you checked out the standard libc
resolver API? (See resolver(3) for more information)
