Owen has just written this article about subpixel positioning in Pango
http://people.redhat.com/otaylor/grid-fitting/
We also have this as a preview of what MS is upto:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/8/f/18f8cee2-0b64-41f2-893d-a6f2295b40c8/TW04007_WINHEC2004.ppt
Between these two references you can get a pretty good idea of what is needed to
do good fonts with Cairo. It's a whole lot of work.
For the mesa people, the MS slides detail some hardware additions for DX-10. Do
these have extensions defined for them yet? Can ATI hardware support 1bpp
surfaces?
They are also not doing skew/transform in the app. Instead they start with an
oversized 1bpp font and skew it in the graphics engine. This is better from a
caching aspect.
