  I think this sort of audit is a really good idea.

  If the cairo-fixed.c code is OK, maybe it's time to do what was in the
now-mysteriously-absent patch here:

    http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3893

  IIRC, the issue holding it back was that there were known bugs.
