There's missing API here.

None of it is hard to add. It's just blocking on a decision for what
the API should look like. We've had some discussion about it in the
past, which you can find in this bugzilla entry:

and in the mailing list thread it points to.

Opinions from those who need this as to what the API should look like
would be helpful.
