Ah, I now understand; you want to "close" the resource
as early as possible. In this case, yes, the
"destroy" callback is okay.

If nobody can register a destroy (close) callback for
my socket, I think this would be okay, too.
I want to avoid closing the socket more than once or
closing it too early. I think I can accomplish this
with your first proposal by always passing NULL for
the "destroy" CB.
