Given reasonably good antialiasing (there is no such thing as more or
less antialiasing; just better or worse approximations of it), the
apperance of "steppiness" is due to a mismatch between your display's
gamma curve and the curve the image was generated for.
It sounds like what you really want is better gamma correction?
