Do I owe you two scoops for the detailed reply?

Has any tried running the freetype autohinter on the glyph outlines
after the reshaping transform instead of before? It wouldn't work to
do this with a standard hinting program, but wouldn't it work with the
autohinter? After the reshape transform the outlines will hit the
pixel grid in different places and the autohinter should give a
different result.
