Well, one usually doesn't draw into one big drawable
but draws into separate surfaces and then compose
these onto the drawable.  From my experience with the
retained mode I can say that it is resonably fast,
even though selecting which object should be drawn
etc. could be optimized.

What *is* slow currently is zooming, because it
requires a re-tesselating of the whole szene.
