That sounds like the right answer to me. I'm glad to let people
maintain other-worldly build stuff like this in CVS, on two simple
conditions:
1) The files don't get in my way, (two .dotfiles seem just
fine in this regard)
2) It's understood that the files aren't the official build
method, (ie. developers will not in general keep these
things up-to-date).
As for the "unofficial" status, this means it's up to you to maintain
the files. And if the build stuff falls far enough behind that we
start getting user complaints about it, we'll just remove it.

Naturally. Portability improvements are always appreciated. Let's see
what you've got.
