Fortunately, 0 is a well defined pointer value, so it 'just works' with 
ANSI-C compilers.  The scary thing is this was all defined in the 
pre-prototype era when the compiler had no idea what the formal type was...

XCB shouldn't have any of these bizarre interface issues...
