I've replicated this bug, and am currently using an X server + cairo
version that is exhibiting this problem. So I'm living with this bug
until it's fixed. Hopefully that will help keep me motivated to find
the fix soon.

PS. In the meantime, you should be able to workaround the bug by using
antialiased fonts.
