We're close to having this bug fixed.

There was a very similar bug in cairo 1.0.4, (it affected only
bitmapped fonts), which we now have a fix for:

In cairo 1.2.0 the bug is affecting both outline and bitmapped
fonts. I've got a minimal test case reproducing this now and should
have a fix soon:

The _other_ bug here is the fact that antialiasing is being turned off
for font sizes outside the requested ranges. I haven't yet looked into
that issue at all yet. So if anyone wants to do that, please feel
free---it would be helpful. And if so, please report any findings
either here on the list, or else in bugzilla through a new bug report,
(neither of the bugs listed above are appropriate for this additional
bug).
