[cairo] autogen.sh errors

I'm getting the following errors when running ./autogen.sh

awk: calling undefined function AC_PREREQ
  input record number 1, file
  source line number 1
awk: syntax error at source line 1
  context is
         NR==1 { if( $(NF) >= >>>  AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE([ <<<
awk: illegal statement at source line 1

I'm guessing it has to do with f85aca4c3ff02a38b83da48b618e420b79b29c37

This is on Mac OS X 10.4.7. This happens even after I upgrade to  
these versions of autotools:

gawk 3.1.5
autoconf 2.60
automake 1.9.6
glibtoolize 1.5.22
pkgconfig 0.21

Ideas?
