[cairo] use of linear gradients in PDF causes huge file sizes ?

hello
I have tried to use cario for printing out some advanced report using cairo
onto a PDF/PS..
When i used linear gradients .. I get huge files sizes upto 40 MBs etc..

Has this issue been sorted out ?
Is there a way to use Cairo in a different way to keep the file sizes to
minimum...

If so Can u suggest the proper code to implement linear-gradient in a PDF..
(in 2-3 lines ofcourse)
