[cairo] drawing text to a bitmap?

Is is possible to create a surface for a bitmap (pixmap of depth 1) that would 
allow me to draw text into it?

Is cairo_xlib_surface_create_for_bitmap () what I need?

I get BadDrawable when I hit cairo_show_text () or pango_cairo_show_layout ().
