[cairo] cartographic projection

The thought occurred to me that it might be reasonable to use some sort of transform matrix to achieve simple geo-spatial projections. For example if I have a bunch of point and lines stored in lat/lon, perhapses I could just use some clever cairo scaling and just use the lat/long for my cairo x/y. Cartography and matrices are not really my thing. Has anyone done anything like this? Any thoughts or directions?
