[cairo] Freetype requirements

Hi

I need to compile a recent cairo under older linux platforms like RHEL3 
and SuSE 9.1. However, configure fails since the installed version of 
freetype is to old (9.3.3).

I tried to just patch the configure-script to allow this older version 
of freetype, and now everything builds just fine.

Anyone knows why cairo requires the newer version? What bugs or problems 
should I expect?
