Clearly reusing surface does not work well in 1.9.8.

Unfortunately, a number of items like concurrency, text and polygon
clipping/drawing in image surfaces seem to be broken in 1.10 release
(that work fine in 1.9.8) - and we use all of those. Hopefully these are
being fixed in current, but for now replacing 1.9.8 is not really an option.
