Thing is OCAL *users* aren't covered by those DMCA safe harbor
provisions. It's not user-uploaded to them. And claiming "but I got it
from OCAL" doesn't protect you from the expenses of having to deal
with a copyright troll looking to squeeze a settlement out of you. The
joys of the American legal system, eh?

That's why it's important to be very circumspect about the stuff
that's uploaded and very public and detailed about when/why items are
removed. If something's online for a few months before the DMCA notice
comes in, the ripple effect can be huge. And even if OCAL doesn't get
hurt, it's users can get slammed.

Our government keeps passing IP laws that are more and more consumer
unfriendly, giving copyright holders more and more rights to screw
with people. Last month Lawrence Lessig co-authored an Op/Ed piece
about an upcoming attempt by the Obama administration at passing crazy
restrictive copyright laws through a backdoor.

Because OCAL users don't enjoy the same protections OCAL does, OCAL
needs to be as careful as it can possibly be.
