Nobody understood autotools. I've been developing software for over a
decade, and I understand more about meson in a few days of using it
than the combination of autoconf, automake, intltool, and assorted m4
helpers.

I think a lot of project maintainers will disagree with you. I ask you
to have a look at the meson syntax and tell me if it's more or less
understandable than the automake script.
Please also note: I don't migrate build systems lightly. It's fairly
boring work that doesn't produce any better "end product" and I'd much
rather be fixing bugs or adding new features. At some point the "cost"
of using a tool that's slow and that nobody really understands just
converts to technical debt that has to be repaid. Meson is an order of
magnitude faster than autotools, which means I'm now more productive.
