That's a great question. Red Hat hired Sebastian Wick a while ago, and he's the person that's been working on the CM protocol for wayland that was just merged. He's also been tackling HDR (which is essentially the same problem as CM) and rewritten chicks of mutter, gnome-shell and gnome-session to make it all work. We're probably one or two cycles off dropping colord as a dep in GNOME -- it'll all work over wayland without a system daemon providing devices and profiles. The one regression is CM printing, but I don't think anyone actually uses that in reality -- and the people that do have it all set up as scripts rather than clicking File->Print.
