I'm not sure what the beryl folks have done to the blur compiz 
(improvements while dealing with transformed windows, the new cache 
option, etc), but it's working very fine here since some versions. I 
have it enabled with transformed windows (dragging windows around 
doesn't disable it) and is very fast, that on a nvidia fx 5200 (very low 
end card).
