Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, it does not change anything.

After these updates, I restarted X, and compiz was broken.

The NVidia driver itself was updated to 169.01 on January 31, so long
before the problems started.

On Mandriva's Bugzilla somebody else confirmed having the same problem.
Apparently we are both using x86_64 and nvidia 169.09
