[compiz] Which effects are 3D and which are 2D?

A couple of important points:

First, everything compiz renders is done via opengl, which requires 3D
acceleration and support for the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap
extension. There is no real distinction between 3D and 2D.

Second, *all* r100 through r500 cards (essentially the radeon 7200
through the radeon x1950) have 3D support in the open source drivers.
It may not be enough to play doom3 with maxed out settings, but it is
certainly enough to use compiz. It is these cards that will be dropped
from fglrx according to phoronix.

Third, all r600 and r700 cards now have 2D support in the open source
drivers. 3D support is being developed. These cards will continue to
be supported by fglrx, according to phoronix.

Finally, the radeon 7500 is an r100, not an r300.
