I was using Jasc Webdraw (extinct) and the gradients were in the
format it used[1].  Unfortunately the parser in Webdraw was quite
brittle so adding any of the OpenClipart.org metadata meant the
gradients could not be used with Webdraw anymore (but I still have the
unmodified originals).  At first I resisted the changes because I wanted
to maximize compatibility but I have given up on that notion.

If someone would like to formalise things then go for it.

[1] The Inkscape gradient management needs a redesign and by providing a
large collection of gradients it was my intention to force any redesign to
properly accomodate a large set of resources.
