Let me repeat then what has already been suggested: Just use the GBR
format but change the file extension and the magic file header to avoid
confusion with the GIMP brush format.

Another option would of course be to address the GIMP developers and to
ask about having the proposed changes to the brush format included in
the GIMP brush format specification.
