A rendering element would be any plug-in pattern source, as opposed to
a filter. In GEGL this corresponds to:
checkerboard rendering, gradients, plasmas, fractals and even text
(which warrant it's own syntax for markup).

Yep, I find that "projection" is a term that is even vaguer and more
ill defined than "cache", perhaps "fallback" is the best term to use
though.
