And the choice of widgets? AFAIK Vala is strictly bound to GTK+. What 
about Qt? wxWidgets?

The next release of Blender has already a Python GUI. And if a GUI 
paradigm is good enough to represent the complexity of Blender, it is 
good enough to represent the processes of all other graphics software.

Lua is a fine GUI language as well (Adobe Lightroom).
