The etherpad software was released as open source, and several sites
using it popped up since then (piratepad being one example).

Gobby doesn't even need a server; every client can also act as the
"server".  And in the case someone starts a "server" on the LAN, other
people can easily access it with the help of mdns-sd (what apple calls
"bonjour").
