using the wakeup_main_function together with dispatch_status_function

This may be true, it was added so long ago I don't really remember.
Wakeup main may have been added before dispatch status, perhaps. In
any case, when hooking into the glib main loop, the wakeup main
function is convenient since it maps directly. (I think this would be
true of any poll-based loop.)
