dbus won't back up

I run Ubuntu 18.? (the bionic beaver gizmo). My problem is that dbus
gives my backup program fits because dbus refuses to be backed up. It
will not allow the backup routine to back up the contents of the dbus
file. Access to the file is refused.
So tell me in plain english: what does dbus actually do? Why are its
contents protected? What happens if I delete dbus? My backup routine
hates it. I cherish peace among my apps. . . .
Thanks for any advice.
Best to you, whoever you are.
