Per your request on fedora-list to test the DejaVu fonts, I installed them
via yum on FC5 and tried Sans Mono in gnome-terminal.  Wide characters
(e.g., "m") overlap the following letter in at least sizes 9, 10, and 11.
DejaVu cannot be used as a terminal font until this is fixed. 

Font Preferences:
    DejaVu Sans Mono
    Fixed Width Font: DejaVu Sans Mono Book 9, 10, 11
    Details:  96x96 dpi, Smoothing: Grayscale, Hinting: Medium
Display:
    1152x864, 85 Hz, Millions of Colors, Princeton EO930, ATI Radeon 7000
xdpyinfo:
    91x92 dots per inch
Native US English speaker
