           Summary: should Condensed be Semi-condensed
           Product: DejaVu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: PC
               URL: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/os2.htm#wdc
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Experimental fonts
        AssignedTo: dejavu-bugs at lists.freedesktop.org
        ReportedBy: moyogo at gmail.com

We currently shrink Sans and Serif fonts to 90% for experimental Condensed fonts.

The OpenType specifies several usWidthClass (see
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/otspec/os2.htm#wdc ) of which Condensed (3)
is 75% aspect ratio of Normal (5) and Semi-condensed (4) is 87.5%, i.e. closest
to 90%, aspect ratio of Normal.

To follow the naming of the OT specs our current 90% Condensed should be renamed
Semi-condensed. This might be unnecessary or even negative for users currently
using it, even if experimental. However the earlier the better.

The current usWidthClass is 5 which is Normal. For a Condensed font it should be
3 and for a Semi-condensed it should be 4. This must be fixed.

NameID=16 could be set so smart applications can put DejaVu Condensed in the
same family as DejaVu fonts but that's another bug.
