Deja Vu fonts. This makes the fonts not conforming to the Unicode standard, as the standard requires all canonically equivalent sequences to be rendered the same way. A short list of some of the cases I discovered follows. I didn't do a thorough analysis: U+0374 = U+02B9, but the glyphs are different: ʹʹ U+0387 = U+00B7, but the glyphs are different: ·· I think that for each of such cases, DejaVu should select the most appropriate of the two shapes (or one in the middle) and then create two CMAP entries from the two characters to the same glyph (or make one use glyph references to the other). In the case the characters really need to appear differently in Greek contexts, DejaVu should add the greek alternates under names such as "periodcentered.greek" and use the appropriate OpenType features to handle this. Of course, it may be said that the rendering engines should take care of Unicode equivalence, instead of passing the character directly to the font. Even if that is the desired behavior, a rendering engine that normalizes strings to, say, NFC before passing it to the font layout subsystem, will never display the Greek forms of the glyphs (U+0374 and U+0387) and will always use U+00B7 and U+02B9 forms. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. The ligatures ffi and ffl are still broken, however, because you only specify the substitutions: f + f + i -> ffi / f + f + l -> ffl As a consequence, when rendering the character sequences ffi or ffl, Pango first combines the two f into one ff ligature, and when it gets to the i or l part, the substitution rule no longer applies because there are no longer two f plus i / l in the input, but one ff ligature plus i / l. I believe the right thing to do (and it definitely works) is to have two substitution, one of which takes the precombined ff ligature as input: f + f + i -> ffi / f + f + l -> ffl ff + i -> ffi / ff + l -> ffl Also, it would be really nice if the standard ligatures could also be reenabled in all other DejaVu fonts (except for SansMono, of course). This is not counting the value 0, which is the ".notdef" character. This means that the value should be 0x20 for all the DejaVu fonts, as space is the first character supported. A font with no particular differences in weight or style (e.g. medium weight, not italic and fsSelection bit 6 set) should have the string "Regular" stored in this position." The field is defined defined according to the following part of OpenType spec: http://www.microsoft.com/OpenType/OTSpec/maxp.htm For the field, the spec says "Maximum levels of recursion; 1 for simple components." This means that if a font doesn't use references the value should be one, but if it does, for each level, one should add one to the value. All DejaVu fonts currently have "4" in the field. The MS Font Validator tool generates an error about the field, saying that based on its computations, the value should be 6. From my own computations, it should be at least 5 for DejaVu fonts. For DejaVuSans, for example, the following sequence can be found: uni1F92 -> uni1F22 -> uni1FCD -> uni1FEF -> grave If the rendering systems actually use this value, this will result in problems rendering the fonts. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. Some of the errors are not real errors, as the tool has been not been updated for a while, so we should check the standards carefully before acting quickly. But I believe many of the errors are critical in some scenarios. I think we should even check Pass and Info lines, as they may say things that we did not really intend them to say. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <20061127195543.E37C113006B@annarchy.freedesktop.org> Please do not reply to this email: if you want to comment on the bug, go to the URL shown below and enter yourcomments there. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9176 Summary: Make Sans Italic a true italic? Product: DejaVu Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: Sans AssignedTo: dejavu-bugs@lists.freedesktop.org ReportedBy: baums@u.washington.edu DejaVu Sans Italic is currently not a true italic face, but on oblique face. This is about characters such as Latin ‘a’ and Cyrillic ‘а,’ ‘г,’ ‘т’ etc. that do not actually change to their proper italic shape but only get slanted (contrast Serif normal and Serif Italic). Is there a reason for not having a real Sans Italic, or is it just low on the list of priorities? (Is there a policy of preserving glyph shape identity with the Bitstream Vera fonts?) Thanks, Stefan -- Configure bugmail: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee.
