Same effect: rxvt: can't load font "-dejavu-dejavu sans
mono-medium-r-normal-*-17-120-100-100-m-*-*-*"

Maybe rxvt is searching fonts somewhere else than - for instance - Konsole.
(This is Gentoo Linux but I'm not expecting you to solve my rxvt-Linux-font
problem)

Did you try this under Linux or under Cygwin/rxvt?

I don't fully understand your request. What does "string with descenders like"
mean? You want just a string with j_g or something else?
