We have this bug reported in our bugzilla (Gentoo Linux):

BTW. I've tried to debug this problem a bit. So I've moved back to dejavu-2.21
and did:
$ fc-match -s sans:italic > fc-match-2.21
Then installed 2.22 and repeated:
$ fc-match -s sans:italic > fc-match-2.22

Now take a look at difference:
$ colordiff -u fc-match-2.21 fc-match-2.22
--- fc-match-2.21       2007-12-19 07:17:59.000000000 +0300
+++ fc-match-2.22       2007-12-19 07:13:47.000000000 +0300
@@ -1,7 +1,7 @@
