The problem is that there is no TrueType hinting in Serif Italic, while normal
Serif does have hinting. 

If you only use the autohinter, chances of different font heights between
regular and italic are less likely to occur (though possible as far as I know).
With TrueType hinting enabled the font instructs in Serif to adjust the glyph
size, while it's not happening in italic as well.

The obvious way to fix this is of course to add the hinting instructions to
Serif, but of course, that's not something which is easily done...
