Both PCs have Windows XP SP3.
Yes, it occurs in every application.

As to the third question - at the moment I'm not sure what have happened. Maybe
Windows installed some update which revealed a bug in DejaVu fonts? That was my
first idea, but now I would guess it's Windows' bug. The strange thing is the
problem occurred at the same time on my PC and laptop.

The only coherent explanation that comes to my mind is that I've copied new
version of DejaVu fonts to Windows fonts directories of both computers
previously bringing them back from hibernation. After restart everything was
back to normal. So in fact it means there is a bug in Windows not in DejaVu
fonts.
