Ahh, didn't see this until now because you didn't reply-to-all.
I'm not sure how to fix libatasmart. It seems that it is looking for
an environment variable that does not exist and I can find no code in
the universe that ever was supposed to set it, and if it is not found,
issues an IDENTIFY DEVICE command. Easier to just avoid the bug, plus
I'm also planning on patching udisks to check the new kernel runtime
pm first before trying to issue the CHECK POWER command, which causes
the runtime pm to wake up.
