status of gcc 4.3 in your distribution?

(Not really the place to reopen the discussion, but perhaps others have
similar questions:)
I wonder whether we could make that into a switch and pass it down via
(newly added support for) CFLAGS/LDFLAGS?
Also, why don't we simply build with gcc 4.2 the packages that need to
be?
