Do you mean by editing the source and recompile the Linux kernel? An
option would be great for drm modules (?) to disable loading of
firmware. Could this be implemented for all modules or does it have to
be coded up each module separately?

For the use case right now the performance is good enough. Being a
laptop I would only be interested in saving power. Is there a difference
when the firmware is used?
